Steel of the Month - Niolox 05 October 2015 David STEEL OF THE MONTH - NIOLOX Our steel of the month for October is Niolox. Niolox is an excellent choice for people wanting all the characteristics of a stainless steel but properties of a tool steel. We stock Niolox in addition to our other knife making steels in 2.2mm, 3.2mm, 4.2mm, 5.2mm and 6.2mm thickness' in a wide range of widths. Our Niolox is stocked in it's annealed condition. The Niolox stock range is available to view here. Niolox is a stain resistant tool with good edge holding and decent toughness. Niolox contains Niobium an excellent carbide former. Niolox has a typical work hardness range 58 - 63HRc. Niolox is a very fine grained steel with aides it's edge stability but maintains D2 like wear resistance. We ship Niolox worldwide to! Niolox Heat-treatment Guide Preheat to 400 degrees centigrade and keep it there for approx 1 minute per mm cross section Heat up to 650 degrees centigrade and keep it there for approx 1 minute per mm cross section Austenise at 1050 degrees centigrade and keep it there for at least 15 minutes Quench in oil (preheat oil to at least 70 degrees centigrade) Niolox can be cryo treated if required but it is not necessary Temper in an oven let it cool down in air Tempering for 60 minutes at 180 degrees centigrade yields approx 60HRc Tempering for 60 minutes at 300 degrees centigrade yields approx 54HRc
